Here is my reply to an unexpected, but welcome, email:

Hey,friend ______,

☼Your email has kick-started my day.☼

You are so thoughtful!

I don’t think anybody has ever thanked me for being in Vietnam; and I’ll tell you a small secret: When I turned in last night, I vaguely wondered if I would hear from anybody (on Veterans Day) about the fact that I am a veteran…

Well, Vietnam was 40+ years ago and 9,300 miles away, and I wouldn’t take a million dollars for the experience – nor would I do it again for a million dollars.

I wouldn’t call Army service a “sacrifice.” I made some good friends, saw a good part of the Orient, and got a first-hand look at history.

In those days of yore, we just did what we had to do, but I’m afraid times have changed. It seems that too many people these days are asking what their country can do for them, rather than the vice versa urged by JFK.

Forgive my rambling, and thanks again for the email.
